recs!

[info]kaydeefalls made a brilliant vid about the ladies of Doctor Who, Book of Days. *_*

[info]golden_d wrote a sequel to her Jack & Toshiko linguistics sotry, They Still Write Poetry in the Fifty-First Century, with They Still Tell Stories, Too, and it's spellbinding.

Some more Yuletide recs:

A Perfect Honeymoon (Some Like It Hot, Daphne/Osmond)

Lots of people seem to have read this already, but it's wonderful, and fantastically queer in a number of ways.

Though I Walk Through The Shadow (T:TSCC, John/Savannah)

Future!Savannah, naturally. And I absolutely certain she would grow up to be this kick-ass. This does some interesting things with the post-S2 timeline.

First and Last Rites (T:TSCC, Ellison, Sarah, Savannah)

This plays on some of the same themes as the above story, but from the other end. They make interesting companion pieces but this is a great story in its own right.

Eudaimonia (T:TSCC, Ellison, John Henry)

A conversation about virtue theory. This made my inner philosophy nerd very happy, and it's also a brilliant, unsettling scene that should have been on the show.

Also, I am - tumbling? tumblring? Whatever, I have a tumblr account, and I am mostly using it for lulz and pictures with a bit of social commentary segued in occasionally. synaxed@tumblr, if you're interesting.

someone came and kissed me there
Harry Potter ; Remus/Sirius ; PG-13 ; 2500 words
Three times Remus and Sirius kissed under the mistletoe, and one time they didn't need it.

Hm - was going to do a fic round up post, but in all honesty I'm not thrilled with my writing output this year. I feel it's mostly marked by the things I didn't write - the big bangs I signed up for, that Late Bloom sequel, all the other bits of WIPs sitting on my computer. Alas.

But briefly, I think Remember Me As A Time Of Day (Merlin, Gwen/Morgana) is my best story, and And Tomorrow (Torchwood, Jack/Ianto, CoE fix-it) is my personal favourite for what are probably obvious reasons. I'm also fond of Someone Else's Shoes (Torchwood, Tosh, Gwen) and Something Old, Something New (Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, Arthur/Gwen, Gwen/Morgana).

I do feel like doing the vid round up meme, though - vidding was good this year! Also, it means I can procrastinate on festvidding some more.

moar yuletide

I am having so much fun reading every time I get a moment to myself, goodness.

First, here are some recs for the things I've particularly loved so far:

nor no man ever loved (Four Weddings and a Funeral) - the film's problematic to say the least re. dead gay people, and this story took my pain away a little. It's lovely.

Five stories the Reader never began (If on a winter's night a traveler) - I've never read the source, but this is incredible. It's about Yuletide, and fandom, and storytelling, and everyone should read it!

Robots Need Love Too (Mythbusters) - aw! This is a Jamie&Adam future school!au and it's completely endearing. I love the worldbuilding and the adorable characterisation. Definitely enjoyable with or without source knowledge.

map. (Public Service Announcements) - this is basically original fic and it's lyrical and soft and gorgeous, all about a friendship/romance, my favourite kind!

Zihuatanejo (The Shawshank Redemption) - oh, oh, oh. Okay, so Shawshank is my favourite film and this is just - well, it's the perfect coda and it makes my heart grow three sizes.

A Matter of Perspective (Black Books) - I cannot even deal with how perfectly the author captures the trio's voices, it's hilarious and wonderful.

Do remember to leave the writers a little love if you enjoyed their stories! They'll be very glad to hear it.

*

Also, another thing, if you'd like to guess what I have in the Archive, here are some clues! Ficlets to any correct guesses.

+ There are two stories, one in the main Yuletide collection, and one yet to be revealed in Madness.
+ I have mentioned both sources here before, but never written for either.
+ Both prominently feature at least one female character.
+ One is gen, one is not.
+ One is seasonally themed to some extent, the other is not.
+ One is a little bit of a departure from my usual fare, the other is very much not.

I have a story, a wonderful story!

The Way In (Imagine Me & You, Luce/Rachel, Edie)

It's a gorgeous, funny, sweet snapshot of Rache moving in, and Edie especially is absolutely wonderful. A great post-film snippet!

I now have approximately a bazillion tabs open of shiny fandoms that have new stories in them, I can't wait to dive in properly.

I'm about to start my favourite part of Christmas - a quiet little time I etch for myself on Christmas Eve when everyone else has gone to bed. I light candles, make a mug of something warm and stay up a little too late listening to King's College Choir sing Christmas carols. These days, I also write last-minute Yuletide stories.

And so, I wish everyone who celebrates an exceedingly Merry Christmas, a joyous holiday to all those celebrating in other ways, be it simply some time off, and an excellent day to all those who have nothing special on this week. And of course, may you have delightful Yuletide reading come tomorrow.

I'll be one of the many chalking up 2009 as not my greatest year - for my part, largely due to prolonged mental ill health - and I'll be glad to see the back of it. However, this year has been immeasurably better due to all of you, my fandoms and my friends.

eta: as I type this, a v-gift arrived from [info]oxoniensis - thank you, sweets! ♥ :D

As a token of my affection - cut for hugspam (not particularly dial-up friendly) )

To all, a good night.

Via [personal profile] giandujakiss: honest to goodness, real live special snowflake wank. Oh, the entitlement. Oh, the delicious irony. My day, it is made. Enjoy!

+ Stories are submitted, cards are posted, presents are wrapped, I am prepared for Christmas! \o/

+ Which of course means I am giving myself a bunch of Yuletide plot bunnies, oops. A few notes on that - first off, writing Yuletide treats (which can be any length for any prompt) is open to anyone with an AO3 account. Get an account invite here. You can browse yuletide letters at the yuletide comm or in a very handy spreadsheet!

+ Also, a signal boost for Yuletide pinch-hitters via [personal profile] elynross:

Apparently Yahoogroups has changed some policy, and the wave of pinch hits sent out has DISABLED MY YAHOO ACCOUNT. I can't post to it to tell the pinch hitters why I'm not responding to claims. Of the 20+ groups I belong to or own, only 3 are displaying, presumably because the rest are on the email address that has been disabled. I... am not a happy camper.

At this point, I need to sleep, and there's very little I can do about this. If you want to claim a pinch hit, you'll need to *forward* or otherwise get the info to my personal email (elynross@gmail.com), and I'll work with that, and try and respond when I get up in a few hours.

Please boost the signal on this, to try and reach other people on the pinch hit list. I'm not sure how the second half of the pinch hits are going to go out, but we'll figure something out.

+ So, Merlin. spoilers & picspam )

+ I didn't get the chance to reply to comments the other day, but thank you to everyone who laid down some science in my last post.

+ My [info]rs_small_gifts and [info]camelotsolstice gifts have both been posted! I am not allowed to read them until I've finished my own submission for the former, but I can't wait to get to them. Thank you, kind gift-making people! ♥

+ I have to say, everyone's flaily posts about Yuletide are making me feel a little better about dropping out. *g* However, I offer much cheerleading - go fandom go!

+ I have successfully made it home despite the flurries of snow that have started appearing - this is England, after all, where transport is not designed to cope with anything that might be described as a weather condition. I can't quite believe I survived this semester, and I am very, very happy to be home.

+ There have been various recent instances of fail I do have things to say about, but I just don't have the energy. I will say, however, that I am completely horrified at the BBC. Just, oh my god, Not Okay. (And, to pre-empt, please note that I am in no mood to argue about whether there's a problem with legitimising the question of whether queer people ought to be allowed to live. Not to mention that as a response to the current situation in Uganda, it's massively offensive to the people currently facing death threats from their own government. Please don't bring that 'debate' to my journal.)

+ Anyway. I am doing my best to resolutely shake off the above - I have tea, a massive jumper, I am sitting on my parents' sofa and now I am going to write a little fic and finish my Christmas cards. Speaking of, thank you to [info]misswinterhill and [personal profile] avendya, your cards were waiting for me when I got home today! ♥
